Hi Irene Luu and Eric Lewis, thank you for the info you've provided. I've tried to replicate this on a Samsung Galaxy S20, wondering if perhaps it might be down to exiting the app while the save process was still taking place, but I've not been able to.
If you are able to answer some of the following questions, that would be very helpful!
- Could we confirm that you don't think the data for the app got cleared in the Android settings, either intentionally or automatically? (
- How much memory does your device have available?
- Have either of you experienced this data loss/app resetting with any other apps?
- When you reopened the app the first time and discovered schedules and past reading were missing, do you remember if you had the green splash screen, or did it go straight to the Dashboard but it was empty?
- Have you been reading in the in-app reader, or with the ministrybooks.org integration?
- If the ministrybooks.org integration - before you uninstalled and reinstalled the app, when you selected the option in the top right to mark the reading complete, did it show the two buttons, or did it show checkboxes? (Trying to determine which version of the app you may have been on.)
In addition:
Eric Lewis - when you import from a backup file, it should update messages marked complete in your Overall Progress, but at this stage it does not restore schedules. You could go to Stats and Overall Progress to check if the import did anything. Also, what are the two devices that you said you had experienced this on?
Irene Luu - could you confirm if you had auto backup on, and did it work for you to at least restore the past messages completed? (If so, you should at least be able to look at your Stats / Overall Progress, and then recreate your schedules starting from the message you were up to.)
Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this. Thank you for your assistance!
Eric Lewis
SL: The overall stats were also blank. As best i could tell at the time it was as if the app were freshly downloaded. No progress or schedule or anything. Devices are Samsung Galaxt Tab S7 FE tablet and Galaxy S20+ phone.
Eric Lewis
- No. I dont think so. The last time it happened all i did was lock the tablet and reopen a few minutes later to read some more.
- Tablet - 18GB free of internal memory, 235GB on SD card. Phone - 53GB and 130GB respectively
- Not that I know of
- Just opened to empty dashboard as best I recall, but I couldn’t swear to that
- I use the in app reader

Eric Lewis: Thanks. For the backup/import files - these were generated by auto backup, is that correct? Can you try opening the one that you imported, and see if it had data in it? Was there another file with a slightly older timestamp that is a larger size/has more data in it - and would that one work to restore your data (completed readings)?
I am wondering if the backup you restored was created after everything got wiped and therefore had nothing in it. Auto backup though should have generated a new file each time you reopened the app so a previous file might have the completed progress.

It happened to me again the other day on my Samsung Tab A7. This is after I had uninstalled and reinstalled the app with the most updated version. I have more than enough memory on my tablet. It is set to backup to my SD card. I am reading from the app not the internet. The data was not cleared intentionally or by accident. I have never experienced this data loss with any other app. I hope that helps you. I am currently reading from my the app on my phone and have not had a problem with it. My phone has the old version. I had downloaded it on my phone before my tablet. Is there a way to sync one to the other? I hope to get back to reading on my tablet because the screen is bigger. However, I'm afraid the same thing will happen again. Should I attempt to download the updated version onto my phone? How do I do that without everything being wiped out?
SL
Irene Luu: Hi Irene, thank you for the information.
There is not currently a way to sync your schedules across devices. At present, the only way to sync your read messages would be to export your data, either manually or using the automatic backup, and then transfer that backup file to your other device, and import it. At this stage you may find it easier to create the same schedule on both devices at the same time, and you can mark complete in Edit Progress what you have read on the other device.
Providing the current version on your phone is a recent enough version, you should be able to update the app without changing your schedules or overall progress. To be safe, you can export your data first. If there is an issue with a reinstallation, you can import your data so the app knows the past messages you have read, and then you can recreate the schedule starting from the message you have not yet read.

@Irene Luu and Eric Lewis thanks for sharing this. Irene, please confirm that you are now using the latest version/build which is version 1.2/build 1454 (confirm under "More") and if this happens again to either of you on this latest build (1454), please report back. We will look into this in the meantime. Thanks!

My schedules were: Life-Study of Matthew 2 messages every Thursday, Life-Study of Acts 1 message every Monday and Life-Study of 1 & 2 Chronicles 1 message every day. I don't know what the build was because I uninstalled and reinstalled the app. This happened on my Samsung Galaxy Tab A7.

Irene Luu and Eric Lewis thank you for reporting this serious issue. Can you both please confirm which version/build (in the More page) and OS (iOS or Android) you are using? Also, can you share the schedule you made and the circumstances under which this has happened? Finally, did you turn on auto-backup and are you able to import your progress back in? Thanks.
Eric Lewis
DC: My schedule was simple. Romans life study on Sunday and Wednesday, 2 life studies each week. I deleted and reinstalled the app so I'm not sure which build it was (but i had only recently downloaded it, within the last few weeks). The current one is Android version 1.2/build 1454. No special circumstances. I finished and saved a reading, closed the app, decided to read some more a little while later and progress was all gone. I hade auto backup turned on but nothing changed when i imported the backup file.

I have had this same problem. It is like the app reverts back to as if it is a freshly installed app. No reading history, no schedule - nothing. This is the second or third time this has happened to me on this app on two different devices.
